Met Gala 2019. My favourite outfits.

I love the Met Gala. It’s by far my favourite red carpet event of the year. The fashion, the freedom and the drama coming together into one gala makes it the only celebrity event that I’ll really stay up to date with.

This year the theme for the gala was ‘Camp: Notes on fashion’. The theme is inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay ‘Notes on ‘Camp’, which is widely credited to have introduced the notion of ‘Camp’ to the mainstream.

‘The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration,’ Sontag once explained in Partisan Review.

So when the gala finally arrived and the photos started coming in I was immediately on Vogue sorting through the hundreds of celebrities to find my favourite outfits of the evening. And I must say that the theme of Camp certainly allowed for imaginations to run wild.

Love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration often led to outfits that would normally be considered overdone and tacky but with the theme in play it transformed the cringe into so-bad-that-It’s-actually-good.

My Personal Favourites

These are the outfits that I don’t care if they’re on theme or not, I loved them at first sight.

Best On Theme

I can’t deny how well these outfits matched the theme. Tracee Ellis Ross and Zendaya can truely do no wrong.

Not On Theme but I Love Them Anyway

Technically with a theme as broad as Camp: Notes on fashion anything could be worded to fit into it but these are the outfits that I thought were toeing the line but I love them regardless.

Best of Men

Honestly I had high hopes with the Met Gala that men would embrace more than their black suits. And they did, but only just. Anyway, there were a few standouts to me and I cherish them dearly. (Notice I blurred out Harry Styles because that outfit was disappointing to me.)

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this years Met Gala theme. The outfits were on point and even if I didn’t love them immediately their exaggeration and so-bad-it’s-good tackiness often meant that I applauded them anyway. I’m already looking forward to next year and doing this all over again.
