As I spent 2019 in a no-buy of any new makeup or skincare, the rules I set myself didn’t really allow me to declutter my collection to buy new products and so this is the first big makeup declutter that I’ve done in a long time.
I’m so glad for that year of not buying makeup as it taught me to be more appreciative of what I own and also the satisfaction of using up my makeup instead of giving it away so this declutter wasn’t anything huge or reckless.
I’m trying to use up most of my makeup this year through the natural process of wearing it until it’s done, so most of the makeup in this declutter will be passed along to friends and family who I know will actually wear it when I wouldn’t and only the absolute minimal amount being thrown away.
I started this declutter after looking at my lipstick collection and realising it was silly for me to own so many products that I know I’ll never wear. I have spent the last 18 months wearing lipgloss every day and I don’t see that changing any time soon. On top of that, I also don’t like wearing bold lip colours as I’m so clumsy that I worry the pigment will catch somewhere on my teeth or skin so I don’t often bother to wear lipstick. And while I have long known all of that about myself and my lipstick wearing habits I, for some reason, own 14 lipsticks and only 3 lip glosses. So when I saw that ratio the other day I decided to sort through my collection and pull out any of the products that I know I’ll never choose to wear and pass them on to someone who I know will love them.
Face Makeup Declutter
Red Earth Pressed Setting Powder 01 Natural
Like many of the old foundations and powders I bought, this is too dark for my skin tone. I thought I could keep it and use it up as a bronzer however it’s not quite dark enough for that purpose. It’s barely been used so I’ll be passing this on to someone with a closer skin tone than me.
Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless Foundation 110 Porcelain
This was one of the first foundations that I ever bought and I think its formula has started to degrade. I haven’t used it in a long time and when I recently wore it for a few days it was terribly patchy and broke up when I tried to apply other products over it. The main positive I found for this formula was its yellow/neutral undertone for such a pale foundation. It matched my skin tone very well. Due to its degrading quality of formula I’ll be throwing this out and not passing it on.
Lip Collection Declutter
Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lip – Slide
Again, a product I bought a long time ago before I knew the shades that I like and don’t like on my lips. This is the main type of pink/berry shade that I really don’t like to wear. For some reason I just don’t like this lip colour and so I’ve worn it maybe once. The formula I do like and I am keeping my two other shades but I’ll be giving this one away.
NYX Cosmetics Matte Lipstick – Shy
I’ve always wanted a nice, nude lipstick and thought this could be the shade. Unfortunately while it is basically my skin tone, it’s also the worst lipstick formula I’ve ever encountered. It’s completely unwearable, very patchy and clings to the lines in my lips and then breaks apart when you rub your lips together. I honestly look dead when I wear this so I’ll be throwing it out.
The Body Shop Matte Lipstick – New Orleans Scarlet
This was a free gift from The Body Shop and I had the option to pick a nude brown but told myself I should start wearing a red lip more often. What I know now is that I don’t have to force myself to wear bold lips if I don’t like the look of them. I’m a gloss girl and so have literally never worn this lipstick. Luckily I have many family members who live in red lips and will greatly appreciate this new lippie.
Shiseido Smoothing Lip Pencil – RD305/Siren
Another red lip that I was gifted and never wore. I’d actually forgotten about this, due to it being a lip liner I’d put it in the same drawer with my eyeliners and only recently rediscovered it. Again, I’ll be passing this on to a family member.
Unbranded Lip Balm
And finally, a lip balm that was a part of a gift bag that has such a strong chemically smell that I was too afraid to ever apply it. It also melts almost immediately in any warm place so I’ll just be throwing this out.
Eye Collection Declutter
Colourpop Jelly Much Shadow Into Focus
My beloved Jelly Much Shadow! Unfortunately due to it’s formula it has now dried up however it was by far the best cream eyeshadow that I’ve ever tried for my oily, hooded eyelids. It was super pigmented and long wearing. Never creased or broke apart and the colour range is awesome. It will be missed.
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil 604/Milk
I bought this pencil as everyone online was always talking about it being a cult fave or something. Unfortunately, as most cream products do for me, it creases badly, wears away and breaks apart on my oily hooded eyelids. I could maybe wear it on my waterline however I don’t like white as a liner and so I won’t be keeping this.
As I talked about at the start of this 2020 year, my goal is to refine my makeup collection into containing only products that I love and look forward to using. The main way that I want to work my collection down is by using my products up however for certain cases I will turn to decluttering and that is what I wanted to do at the start of the year.
Now that I have been through my collection, I am happy with what’s left that I can use it up naturally and clear it from my collection that way. I might end up doing another declutter later in the year however for now I’m happy with what is gone and what is left in my makeup collection.
